What you actually get
Every claim here is one you can check yourself — open the file, or look at the free preview before you pay for anything.
Open the file in a text editor and you will see <path> data — actual curves with editable nodes. The most common “SVG” sold online is a raster embedded in vector packaging: it looks fine until you scale it, and a cutting machine will trace a box around your artwork instead of the artwork.
Any lettering comes back as paths, not live text. That is why it renders identically on a machine that has never had your font installed — the usual cause of a logo arriving with the wrong letterforms, or none.
Plain SVG with no proprietary extensions: Illustrator, Figma, Inkscape, Affinity, Cricut Design Space and Silhouette Studio all read it directly. Nothing to import, convert or flatten first.

What traces well — and what doesn't
A tracer follows edges. Give it clear ones and the result is indistinguishable from hand-drawn vector; give it a photograph and it has nothing to follow.
Logos and wordmarks · icons and glyphs · line art and outlines · flat cartoon illustration · screen-print and sticker designs · scanned ink drawings with good contrast. Anything with defined edges and flat colour regions.
Photographs · soft gradients and airbrush · heavy drop shadows · motion blur · very low-resolution or JPEG-artefacted sources. No edges means no paths — you get hundreds of blobs that are worse than the original and painful to edit.

Yes — true SVG, where every shape, line and curve is a mathematically defined path with its own editable anchor points and fills. Colour regions arrive as separate closed paths, so you can recolour any one of them individually, resize to any dimension without blur, and open it in Illustrator, Affinity, Inkscape, Figma or Cricut Design Space with nothing locked, flattened or embedded. No raster is hidden inside the file.
We show you the shape count on the preview. A clean trace of flat art is typically tens to a couple of hundred editable paths; a naive converter posterises the same image into thousands of tiny rectangles that technically open in a vector editor and are useless to work with. The number is on screen before you decide, which is the check every "free" converter leaves you to discover after you download.
Those are algorithmic tracers, and both are excellent at what they were built for — they are free, they run offline, and for single-colour line work Potrace is still a fine answer. The differences show up on colour art and on anything you intend to cut. Potrace is black and white by design, so a colour logo comes back as a silhouette, and its own docs note the curve fitting degrades to straight polygon segments when it detects too many corners. VTracer handles colour, but its README lists path simplification as planned rather than shipped, and states that in cut-out mode shapes do not share boundaries perfectly — they have seams, which on a cutting mat becomes a double pass or a hairline gap. Both expect you to tune a corner threshold per image. Clearly traces colour regions into separate closed paths with no parameters to set, and shows the resulting path count before you pay.
Flat art with clear edges traces beautifully: logos, icons, lettering, line art, cartoon illustration, screen-printed designs. Photographs do not — a photo has no edges to follow, so tracing one produces hundreds of blobby paths that look worse than the original and are miserable to edit. If your source is a photo, generating fresh vector art from a description will beat tracing it.
It will try, and the result will inherit the blur as wobbly edges. The tracer can only follow boundaries that exist — soft edges become soft paths. Upscale or re-export the source at a larger size first if you can; anything around 512px or larger on the short edge gives the tracer something clean to follow.
Yes — it traces colour regions, not just outlines, so a multi-colour logo comes back as separate coloured paths you can recolour individually. That is what makes the output editable rather than a flat silhouette.
Yes. Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio and laser software all import SVG, and the output uses closed paths so cut lines resolve properly. Very fine detail from a low-res source can still be too thin to cut cleanly — check the preview at the size you intend to cut before committing material.
Tracing is interpretation, not conversion. The tracer decides where one colour region ends and the next begins, so gradients flatten into bands, soft shadows simplify, and anti-aliased edges become hard ones. On flat art that is invisible; on soft artwork it is obvious. That difference is inherent to raster→vector, not specific to this tool.
