A fill is not shading — it transfers as a solid block of ink
A thermal printer has one tone. It puts down a single-weight black line wherever the artwork is dark, and nothing where it is light — there is no grey and no density variation. So a filled region does not become shading on the stencil; it becomes a solid slab, and every internal line inside it disappears. Digital artwork that reads beautifully on screen because of soft grey shading arrives at the skin as a black shape with no interior information. Stencils are line drawings by necessity, and the shading is decided at the machine, not on the paper.
What a thermal stencil printer needs from the file
- Tone
- None. Single-weight black line only — no grey, no density.
- Fills
- Transfer as solid ink. Interior detail inside a fill is lost.
- Mirror
- Reverse before printing — the stencil is applied face down.
- Line weight
- ≈0.5–1 mm. Thinner and the thermal copier drops it.
- Line spacing
- Lines that nearly touch blur together on transfer. Leave deliberate gaps.
- Sizing
- Set final size before printing. A stencil does not scale afterwards.

FAQ
Thermal stencil printing has one tone. Anything dark enough becomes solid black and anything lighter becomes nothing — there is no in-between, so a soft grey shaded region collapses into a slab and takes the linework inside it with it. Stencils have to be line drawings.
Yes, unless your printer driver does it. The stencil is pressed face down onto the skin, so what prints must be the reverse of the final placement. Lettering makes the mistake obvious; abstract designs do not, which is when it gets missed.
Around half a millimetre before the thermal copier starts dropping them intermittently. Fine detail is generally better opened up on the stencil and tightened by hand at the machine.
Transfer spreads slightly as the stencil solution carries the pigment. Lines that nearly touch on paper close up on skin, so parallel detail needs more separation in the file than looks necessary on screen.
