The catalogue is the reason — not any single print

For one t-shirt, a 300 DPI PNG at final size is perfectly adequate, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. The argument for vector is what happens next: the same design on a mug wrap, a tote, a phone case, a poster and a sticker, each a different physical size. From a raster you are re-exporting at each size and hoping the original was big enough — and the original is never big enough for the poster. From vector, every size is the same file. If you sell one design on one product, this does not matter. If you run a catalogue, it is most of the production workload.

What a print-on-demand platform needs from the file

Platform minimum
300 DPI at final print size, or vector. Vector satisfies every size at once.
Background
Must be transparent. A white box shows on coloured garments.
Print area
Per product, with safe margins. Check before scaling to the edge.
Colour
DTG shifts RGB toward CMYK — deep blacks and neons move most.
Thin lines
Below ≈1 pt DTG may drop them into the fabric weave.
Upload format
Most platforms want PNG on upload — export from vector per product.

How it works

1
Upload your design

A logo, illustration, or a scan of hand-drawn artwork.

2
Confirm the background is transparent

Check against a dark preview — a hidden white rectangle is the most common POD rejection.

3
Export per product

Use the vector as your master and export a PNG at each product's print size.

Free watermarked preview. $10 unlocks the clean, exclusive commercial file — emailed, no account, no subscription.

FAQ

Printful wants a PNG. Why bother with vector?

Because vector is the master, not the upload. You export a correctly-sized PNG per product from it. The value shows up on the fifth product, when a raster original would need re-creating at a size it was never made for.

Why was my design rejected for a white background?

A PNG that looks transparent in a file browser can still carry a solid white rectangle — very common when the image came from a screenshot. On a black shirt it prints as a visible white box around the artwork.

Do colours print the way they look on screen?

Not exactly. Screens are RGB and DTG inks are closer to CMYK, so saturated blues, deep blacks and neons shift most. Most sellers keep a printed sample of their palette rather than trusting the monitor.

Can I use this commercially?

Yes. The $10 unlock is an exclusive commercial licence for that file — sell the products, no subscription, no account.
