DTF prints raster.
Work in vector anyway.

A DTF printer rasterises whatever you send, so vector is not a hard requirement — which is exactly why the advice online is so muddled. The real reasons are resolution independence across garment sizes and a hard alpha edge for the white underbase. Both decide whether the print reads sharp or fuzzy.

The honest answer

You can print a PNG. Here is what it costs you.

Two failure modes, both invisible on screen and both obvious on the garment.

Scaling across sizes

One design usually runs at several sizes — a left-chest logo, a youth front, an adult full-back. A raster built for the smallest becomes soft on the largest, and the printer has no way to add detail that was never there. Vector exports every size from the same master at full sharpness.

The underbase edge

DTF lays white ink under the colour. The printer derives that underbase from your alpha channel, so a soft antialiased edge produces a faint white halo around the artwork. A vector-derived alpha is hard-edged, and the underbase lands exactly where the ink does.

Vectorize

Clean the edge

Close open paths, remove stray nodes left by tracing, and check the outline at 1600%. Anything fuzzy here becomes a halo on the shirt.

Size to the largest run

Set the artboard to the biggest print in the order — usually the adult back — and export everything down from that master, never up.

Export the deliverable

Transparent PNG at 300 DPI at final size, or send the vector directly if your supplier takes SVG or PDF. Keep the vector either way.

Where DTF differs

Constraints that do not apply here

Most artwork-prep advice online is written for screen printing. Applying it to DTF costs you quality for no reason.

No colour separations. DTF is CMYK. A fifty-colour gradient costs the same as a one-colour logo — no screens, no per-colour charge.

No colour reduction. Flattening a gradient to flat spots is a screen-print habit. Here it just makes the design worse.

No weeding. Unlike vinyl, there is no cut line and no negative space to pick out, so fine detail and floating elements are free.

Transparency IS the spec. The one thing that genuinely matters is a clean alpha channel, because it drives the underbase.

What print shops get asked

01Does DTF need vector artwork?+
Strictly, no — a DTF printer rasterises everything and prints CMYK plus a white underbase, so it will happily take a PNG. The reason to work in vector anyway is that one file then serves a left-chest print and a full-back print at identical sharpness. A 300 DPI raster sized for a pocket logo is roughly 90 DPI when scaled to a back print, and that softness shows badly against the hard edge of the underbase.
02What resolution and file type should I send a DTF printer?+
A transparent PNG at 300 DPI at final print size is the standard deliverable, and most print shops ask for exactly that. Export it from vector at the largest size you will ever run, and keep the vector source. If your supplier accepts PDF or SVG directly, send that instead — it removes the resolution question entirely.
03Why do my DTF prints have a faint outline or halo?+
That is the white underbase showing past your artwork. It happens when the transparency has soft, antialiased edges — the printer has to decide where white stops, and a half-transparent pixel gets rounded outward. Artwork built from clean vector paths has a hard alpha edge, so the underbase lands exactly under the ink. A JPEG-sourced trace with fuzzy edges is the usual culprit.
04Can I use a JPG for DTF?+
Only if the design is a full rectangle with no background to knock out, which is rare. JPG has no transparency channel at all, so anything that should be shirt-coloured arrives as white. If a JPG is all you have, vectorize it first rather than trying to erase the background by hand — the mask edge is what determines print quality.
05How small can text and detail go on DTF?+
DTF holds finer detail than screen printing or embroidery, but the practical floor is around 4-5 pt for solid text and roughly 1 pt for line weight. Below that the powder adhesive bridges thin gaps and the detail closes up in the cure. Vector lets you check that at true size before committing; a scaled raster hides it.
06Do I need to reduce colours for DTF?+
No, and this is the main advantage over screen printing. DTF is a CMYK process, so gradients, photographs and unlimited colours all cost the same as a one-colour design. There is no separation step, no per-colour screen charge, and no reason to flatten a gradient — the constraints that shape screen-print artwork simply do not apply.
