Thread cannot render
a gradient.

Embroidery is the least forgiving output a logo will ever meet: no gradients, no hairlines, no fine text, and a hard floor on how small a detail can be before it becomes a knot. Prep the vector properly and digitizing is quick — send a JPG and you will pay for the interpretation.

What the needle removes from your design

A digitizer converts your artwork into stitch paths. Everything below survives that conversion; everything else gets redrawn by someone who has never seen the brand guidelines.

Flat colour only, few of them

Each colour is a thread change. Gradients, soft shadows and transparency have no equivalent — they get flattened to the nearest solid, usually by the digitizer, usually not the way you would have chosen. Reduce to a small flat palette yourself and you keep control.

Nothing thinner than about 1 mm

A satin stitch has a minimum practical width. Hairlines, thin serifs and 6pt text collapse into an unreadable ridge of thread. Thicken strokes and set type above roughly 5 mm cap height before it ever reaches the digitizer.

Convert the raster to editable paths so you can restructure shapes rather than paint over pixels.

Reduce the palette

Collapse to a handful of flat colours and map each to a thread number. Fewer changes means a cheaper, faster, cleaner run.

Thicken and simplify

Fatten thin strokes, remove details below the minimum size, and outline all type. Detail that cannot stitch is detail that becomes a blob.

Hand off with a spec

Send the vector plus final size, placement, and fabric. Digitizing decisions change entirely between a cap, a polo and a heavy hoodie.

The handoff checklist

A digitizer quoting from this list charges less and returns fewer revisions than one quoting from a screenshot.

Final stitched size — Give it in mm. The same logo needs different simplification at 60 mm on a cap than at 250 mm on a jacket back.

Thread colour mapping — Name the thread numbers if the brand matters. Otherwise you are trusting a match by eye on a screen you have never seen.

Fabric and placement — Knit stretches, twill does not, fleece swallows detail. The same file is digitized differently for each.

A one-colour fallback — Many jobs come back needing a single-thread version. Supplying it up front avoids a rushed reinterpretation later.

What operators actually ask

01Is a vector file the same as an embroidery file?+
No, and the distinction matters commercially. A vector (SVG, AI, PDF) describes shapes. An embroidery file (DST, PES, EXP) describes stitches — type, direction, density, sequence, and colour stops. Digitizing is the conversion between them, and it is a skilled manual job. A vector is the input a digitizer wants; it is not a substitute for one.
02How small can text be in embroidery?+
As a working rule, roughly 5 mm cap height for a clean sans-serif, more for anything with thin strokes or serifs. Below that the satin stitches overlap into a ridge and the counters fill in. If the design demands smaller text, the honest answer is to drop the text at that size rather than stitch something illegible.
03Why did my gradient logo come back as flat blocks?+
Because thread has no gradient. The digitizer had to choose solid colours to approximate it, and without direction from you they chose. If the gradient is load-bearing in the brand, supply an approved flat-colour variant for stitched applications — most brand guidelines with any production experience already include one.
04How many colours should I reduce to?+
Fewer than you think. Each colour is a thread change, which costs setup time and adds a failure point. Three to six is comfortable for most logos; above about eight you are paying for complexity nobody will see at arm’s length on a chest.
05Can I just send the digitizer a PNG?+
You can, and many will accept it — they will simply redraw it, at their discretion, and bill for it. You lose control of every judgement call: which detail gets dropped, how thin strokes are thickened, which solid replaces a gradient. Sending clean vector with a spec is cheaper and the result matches the brand.
