How-to · Customize your Shopify chatbot
How to customize your Shopify chatbot — every setting, in order.
13 steps, ~60-90 minutes total, free tier covers all of it. The first 7 are identity + voice (the visible stuff customers see); steps 8-13 are the behavior tuning that separates “another AI chatbot” from “a knowledgeable shop associate.”
Where to invest the most time: step 6 (brand voice) and step 8 (knowledge base). These two fields are where 80% of the quality difference lives.
The 13-step setup
- 01
Open Clearly Agent settings inside Shopify Admin
30 secondsShopify Admin → Apps → Clearly Agent → Settings tab. The embedded admin loads inline; you don't leave Shopify. All customization happens here.
- 02
Name your agent
1 minutePick a name that fits your brand. Common patterns: human first name (Stella, Otis, Aria) for warmth, brand abbreviation (Cosie for Cozy Brand) for distinctiveness, or descriptive (Concierge, Curator) for premium. 20-char max. Customers see this above every reply.
- 03
Upload your avatar
2-3 minutesImage (PNG/JPG/WebP). Crop in-browser to circular or square. Most brands use a friendly illustrated character; some use the founder's face for personal touch. Avoid generic clipart — distinctiveness helps brand recall.
- 04
Set accent color
1 minuteEither pick from 8 presets or paste your brand hex (#FF6B47, etc.). Color shows on: chat bubble, send button, product card highlights, CTAs in the agent's replies. Match your storefront accent for visual cohesion.
- 05
Pick a tone preset
1 minuteFour options: Friendly (warm, approachable, casual), Professional (formal, concise, neutral), Casual (relaxed, contractions, light emoji), Witty (playful, clever, branded humor). Start with the closest match — you can override with custom voice instructions next.
- 06
Write your brand voice instructions (the secret sauce)
5-10 minutesFree-form text field. This is where most stores under-invest. Examples that work: "Use lowercase only", "Never use exclamation marks", "Always offer free shipping when asked", "In Spanish, use tú not usted — we're a casual brand", "Speak like a coastal surf shop, never corporate", "Keep replies under 3 sentences unless explaining a return policy". Be specific; the agent applies these strictly.
- 07
Write a first-message greeting
2 minutesThe opener customers see when they open the widget. Default works ("Hi! How can I help?") but custom is better: "Hi! Looking for help finding the right size?" (fashion); "Hi — questions about ingredients or shipping?" (beauty); "Hi! Need help with your order or finding something specific?" (multi-category).
- 08
Populate the knowledge base
15-30 minutesSettings → Knowledge tab. Paste in: (1) return policy, (2) shipping rates and timing, (3) size chart with fit notes, (4) ingredient lists (beauty/food), (5) FAQ — the 10-20 questions you answer most often in email. Format doesn't matter — the agent reads narrative paragraphs fine.
- 09
Set business hours
2 minutesWhen you're online vs offline. Drives whether the agent says "a human can join now" vs "we'll reply tomorrow". Be honest — if you're a solo founder who answers at 7am-11pm, set that; if you have business hours, set those. Affects customer expectations.
- 10
Configure escalation rules
5 minutesSettings → Handoff tab. Default: escalate when customer says "human", "manager", "agent", "speak to someone". Add: escalate on keywords specific to your business — "refund", "wholesale", "press" for press inquiries, "complaint". Each escalation pings you with full conversation context.
- 11
Add "always mention" / "never mention" rules
5 minutesSettings → Voice → Constraints. Always: "current promo with code SAVE10", "free shipping over $75", "founded in [City]". Never: competitor names, specific allergen warnings unless asked, refund amounts (route to human). Critical for compliance categories (supplements, baby).
- 12
Test before going live
15-30 minutesSettings → Preview shows the widget on a sandbox version of your storefront. Ask it the 10 questions your customers ask most. Tune knowledge base + voice based on responses. Iterate until you'd send the responses yourself.
- 13
Activate the widget
30 secondsSettings → Appearance → toggle "Widget visible on storefront" ON. The Theme App Extension activates immediately; widget appears bottom-right by default. No theme code changes needed.
Where to invest the most time
Most stores rush setup and get average results. The two settings that make the biggest difference between “average chatbot” and “trusted brand voice”:
- Brand voice instructions (step 6). Write 5-10 SPECIFIC rules, not generic adjectives. "Use lowercase only" beats "be casual." "Never mention competitors by name" beats "be professional."
- Knowledge base (step 8). Paste your real return policy, real size chart, real shipping rules. Spend the 15-30 minutes here — agent quality scales linearly with how much real content you give it.
FAQ
- How long does full customization take?
- 60-90 minutes for first-time setup with knowledge base. The voice instructions and knowledge base take the most time and are where the biggest quality lift happens. Identity (name, avatar, color) takes 5 minutes.
- Can I change customization later without disrupting customers?
- Yes — all changes apply instantly to new conversations. Existing in-progress conversations keep their original voice until they end. Safe to tune mid-day.
- What's the most-underused customization?
- Brand voice instructions. Most merchants spend 1 minute on this; should be 5-10. The difference between "AI sounds like every AI" and "AI sounds like our brand" is in this field. Be specific, write 5-10 explicit rules.
- Should I use a serious or playful brand voice?
- Match your brand. Luxury/premium: serious, restrained, never emoji. Streetwear/youth: playful, casual, occasional emoji. B2B/wholesale: professional, formal. Default to mirroring how your product pages already read.
- What's the biggest customization mistake?
- Generic greetings + skipping the knowledge base. "Hi! How can I help?" with no knowledge base = agent fakes answers. Add real content (return policy, sizing, ingredients, FAQ) and the agent transforms.
- Can I A/B test customization variants?
- Not currently — but you can change tone/voice/greeting any time, watch the dashboard for 7-14 days, and revert if conversion drops. Most stores find their voice within the first month then leave it.
- How often should I update customization?
- Quarterly is sensible: refresh promotions in "always mention", update business hours if seasonal, tune voice based on conversation patterns you noticed. Knowledge base — update any time policy changes (returns, shipping, sizing).
